History and Future

DFDS has provided passenger services for more than 139 years.

Our history dates back to the 11th of December 1866 when a group of prominent Danish businessmen led by C.F. Tietgen founded DFDS, which stands for Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab (translated this means The United Steamship Company).

At its inception the company owned 19 ships and since then some 450 ships have carried the DFDS flag: blue with a white Maltese cross.

DFDS A/S today is a modern service organisation and our fleet is one of the largest in northern Europe.

At DFDS Seaways we concentrate on our maritime passengers' needs and expectations for high quality cruising, leisure, holiday and conference trips.

Freight Transport, forwarding, on the other hand, is offered to our professional customers through DFDS Tor Line.
